Last year Canada celebrated a milestone, turning 150 years young! This year there is still reason to celebrate, turning 151 although young by comparison to other countries around the world very few countries have the standards and services that Canada has come to set for the world stage.

Some of these accomplishments include: democracy, universal health care, multiculturalism, free speech, human rights and more. Being a Canadian is truly a luxury not to be taken for granted.

Tesla, no not the car, Nicholas Tesla
June 3, 2018

The name Tesla has become popular in the last few years based on the newest electric car and SUV’s built by the company with the name Tesla. What you may not know is the reason behind the company’s choice in name.

The Tesla Car company was named for Nicholas Tesla, a brilliant electrical engineer, developed a system of alternating current (AC) which enabled power from Niagara Falls to be transmitted great distances in the 1890’s. The system was put into use on November 15,1896 when electric power was transmitted from Niagara Falls to Buffalo.

Prior to Tesla’s discovery, electricity was sent by direct current (DC) no
more than 100 yards, yielding only enough power to light a bulb. His invention of AC power changed the way electricity was used throughout the world!

How much water actually goes over Niagara Falls?
May 26, 2018

When visiting Niagara Falls Ontario, especially from the area of The Niagara Parks Commission Table Rock that has you at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls it is astonishing just how much water quickly falls over! The sound and mist combine to make it a once in a lifetime experience.

Visitors often ask just how much water pours over the Horseshoe Falls/Canadian Falls? The answer is 600,000 U.S. gallons / 2,271,247 liters per second falls 167 feet / 50.9 meters into the Niagara River. To help put this in perspective the average American Family uses 160 gallons of water per day!

Victoria Day!
May 18, 2018

Victoria Day, also commonly referred to as the May 24 long weekend, is the official kick off to summer! With the extra holiday day on the Monday for both Canadians and Americans (Memorial Day) Niagara Falls sees a surge in visitors!

Victoria Day, which is only celebrated in Canada and Scotland, began as a celebration to honour Queen Victoria’s birthday. The British queen was born on May 24, 1819. She is the longest reigning monarch (Queen) in England, remaining on her throne for 63 years, 216 days. On September 9th, 2015, Queen Elizabeth II took the title of longest reigning monarch in British history.

When Queen Victoria died in 1901, Canada’s parliament officially named the holiday Victoria Day. And it was decided that the day would be celebrated on May 24th each year (or on May 25th if the 24th fell on a Sunday).

Niagara Falls, Ontario celebrates this holiday with firework displays over Niagara Falls as well as all of the attractions that close for the winter season for example The Hornblower are all fully functioning, allowing guests to get a head start on summer. If you were unable to make it this year book ahead with Vacation Homes Niagara for next year, we take reservations!

humboldt (1).jpg

Humboldt Broncos, Saskatchewan

April 15, 2018

As first responders, parents and hockey fans we were deeply saddened this week with the horrible news of the bus crash that has now claimed the lives of 16 talented individuals who belonged to the Humboldt Broncos hockey team.

We hope that everyone participated in wearing a jersey on Thursday to show support and have a hockey stick outside their door.

This is a time in the country’s history to come together, to show support: to the families who have lost loved ones, those that survived that will need ongoing support and to improve road safety on our country’s highways and roads.

Hockey is not only is it our national sport/past-time, but has the ability to bring the country together regardless of politics, age, race, or gender.

Our thoughts are with you.

Advantages of A Vacation Home

April 6, 2018

Once you vacation at Vacation Homes Niagara you won’t be able to travel any other way! Here are some of the big advantages.

1. Laundry facilities – Have you ever been on vacation and ruined a piece of clothing? It’s bound to happen. Even if you don’t mind throwing the item out, now you have one less to wear on the trip. At Vacation Homes Niagara, you have a washing machine to clean your clothes.

2. Cook your own food – Vacations are expensive as it is. Eating out three times a day can cost as much as the rest of the trip! The best way to save money (and eat healthier) is to cook yourself. At Vacation Homes Niagara, you have a kitchen and a BBQ to do just that.

3. Variety – Hotel rooms are always the same. You get a couple beds and a bathroom and maybe an outdoor sitting area with two chairs. With Vacation Homes Niagara, the sky's the limit. There are countless different arrangements and amenities to choose from including an amazing outdoor deck that overlooks a vineyard.

4. Privacy – Instead of living and sleeping with neighbors on the other side of every wall, a vacation home rental offers plenty of privacy so you can do anything you like without bothering other people or being bothered.

5. Less crowded – You’re tired from walking all day in Niagara Falls, but now you have to wait in line for an elevator to get to your hotel room. There’s no crowd to fight around your vacation home.

6. Plenty of tech – We’re a tech-loving society now. We want TVs, WiFi, game systems, and plenty of channels to relax. Hotel rooms can’t offer that type of variety, Vacation Homes Niagara offers all of this!

7. You feel at home – A vacation home rental is a home. It’s not some cookie-cutter hotel room where everything is industrial and uncomfortable. You’ll sit on real couches and sleep on comfortable beds. You can relax in a place that feels like a home.

8. Affordability – Most people assume a vacation home is expensive, but they couldn’t be more wrong. In most cases, a vacation home is cheaper than a hotel. Plus, you can fit more people in a vacation home, making it an easy way to accommodate a larger group.

9. Great community – You’ll meet some incredible people in the houses around you. Some live there year round, others are vacationing like you. It’s a great way to meet some like-minded people and learn interesting things about the area.

10. Location, Location, Location - The location of Vacation Homes Niagara puts you within walking distance to the best attractions Niagara Falls, Ontario has to offer! If you don’t feel like walking there is also the WeGo bus.

Hornblower Cruises, Niagara Falls Ontario Canada (Formerly Maid Of The Mist)

March 2, 2018

One of the most iconic tourist attractions in Niagara Falls is the Hornblower Cruise, a cruise that takes you up close to the Canadian (Horseshoe Falls). The Hornblower previously called the Maid Of The Mist.

The original Maid of the Mist was built at a landing near Niagara Falls on the American side of the border. The boat was christened in 1846 as a border-crossing ferry; its first trip was on September 18, 1846. The two-stage barge-like steamer was designed primarily as a link for a proposed ferry service between New York City and Toronto. It was a 72-foot-long side-wheeler with an 18-foot beam which was powered by steam produced from a wood- and coal-fired boiler. It could carry up to 100 passengers.

The ferry did well until 1848, when the opening of a suspension bridge between the United States and Canada cut into the ferry traffic. It was then that the owners decided to make the journey a sightseeing trip, plotting a journey closer to the Falls.

The Maid Of The Mist changed ownership and names in 2014 and is now run and managed by an American Company, but the experience remains the same!  Be prepared to get wet! With slight improvements including the change from the iconic blue rain slickers to red, a reference to the Maple Leaf and new and improved boats with better viewing access it is still a ride of a lifetime.  With the new ownership now in its fourth year, cruises have been extended to offer a wider variety for those that want to see the Falls at different times during the day including a night time firework display. Cruises begin April 1 of each year and it is a must when visiting  Niagara Falls.

Hornblower’s Niagara Falls cruises include:

The Voyage to the Falls: An early morning sunrise cruise, which features an up-close view of the Niagara Gorge, American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. Cruises continue throughout the day.

A Sunset Cocktail Cruise: Guests get to sample Niagara wines and beverages and watch the sunset on the Falls.

The Falls Illumination Cruise: Highlights panoramic views of city lights and multi-coloured illumination of The Falls with a licensed bar and snacks on board.

Falls Fireworks Cruise: On weekends and holidays, visitors can cruise with views of the illuminated Falls and fireworks display. A licensed bar and snacks are also available.

For Prices please visit Hornblower Cruises Niagara Falls.

Decades after Maple Leaf Village and the Ferris Wheel were dismantled and closed a new version was erected on Clifton Hill. The Skywheel owned and operated by the HOCO company is a modern, fully enclosed, temperature controlled "Ferris Wheel."

Tokens are required to purchase ice wine and food, it is truly one of Niagara's finest winter celebrations. Additional events celebrating ice wine are also available at many of the local wineries as well. For more information please Niagara IceWine Festival.
